The upcoming System Shock remake from Nightdive Studios has been in development for years, but it looks like it’s finally on the verge of launch. In the latest Kickstarter update, the developer revealed a new release window for March 2023.
It’s a promising look at the revitalized System Shock, which is built in Unreal 4 and has been re-imagining the original Looking Glass title with modern visuals. In particular, there’s a really impressive gore system that dismembers enemies with a blast of gunfire.
System Shock reborn
System Shock is the fully fledged remake of the ground breaking original from 1994, combining cult gameplay with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface and all-new sounds & music; it even has the original voice actor of SHODAN, one of gaming’s most iconic villains.
The original System Shock was a groundbreaking 3D game that took a methodical approach to exploration whilst revealing a story driven narrative through audio logs and messages scattered throughout the game world. It was a pioneer in interactive storytelling and is widely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time.
A remake of System Shock is currently in development at Nightdive Studios. Although developers have taken a break from the project over the past few years, it looks as though things are back on track and will be released in March 2023.
Dwarf Fortress
If you’re the kind of person who loves games that make you feel like you’ve really stepped into a world, you’ll love Dwarf Fortress. The game drapes every piece of gameplay in procedural simulation dozens of layers deep.
In its core, Dwarf Fortress is a colony management sim. But it also stretches the boundaries of that genre by simulating the entire outside world, its events and stories.
This creates a truly immersive experience that’s more appealing than the real thing, and it’s incredibly rewarding to play. Dwarf Fortress is a game you have to commit to and master, but it’s worth the effort.
